You want to make your bedroom cozier and are torn between a bedspread and a throw. They can both lie on the bed, but you often choose them for a different purpose. You mainly use a bedspread to finish the bed as a whole. A throw is a separate layer that you can also use on the sofa or across the foot of the bed.
The difference is therefore mainly in the use and design. The name alone says little about the thickness, warmth, or dimensions. In our collection of blankets and bedspreads, you will find separate blankets alongside complete bedspread sets. This way you can compare what suits your home.
What does a bedspread do for your bedroom?
You lay a bedspread over the made bed. This keeps the duvet cover largely out of sight and gives the bed a consistent look. That is convenient when you regularly use different bedding, but want to keep the color of your bedroom calm.
You can lay a bedspread completely over the bed or fold back the top part. A bedspread set often includes matching pillowcases. Check the components and sizes per version: the designation '3-piece' alone does not tell you how the cases fit your pillows.
The Lavella Selena bedspread set in white, for example, consists of a 260 × 240 cm bedspread and two matching pillowcases. That is a different purchase than a separate blanket that you grab during an evening on the sofa.
When is a throw or separate blanket more convenient?
You can use a throw in different places. Fold it over the armrest of your sofa, lay it ready on a chair, or use it as an extra layer at the foot of the bed. The advantage of such a separate layer is that you do not immediately have to change the entire bed making.
Take the Lavella Arelis blanket in taupe of 200 × 240 cm, for example. This generous size also shows why 'throw' does not automatically mean 'small blanket'. Compare the actual dimensions and think about how you want to use the item.
Choose based on your main use
- Neatly finishing the whole bed: compare bedspreads and bedspread sets.
- A separate layer on the sofa and bed: look at blankets and throws.
- Matching the bedspread and pillowcases: check the contents of a complete set.
- Only a color accent at the foot of the bed: both are possible, depending on the size and how you fold the fabric.
Are bedspreads always larger or warmer?
No. There is no fixed size limit that separates a throw from a bedspread. You also cannot deduce warmth from the product name. Material, thickness, and any filling differ per item. A decorative bedspread is therefore not automatically a replacement for your duvet.
Read the product description and view the detailed photos. If you are mainly looking for a soft material, you can, for example, view the flannel Lavella Nazli bedspread set in white. Then decide for yourself whether that version suits your desired use.
Can you combine a bedspread and a throw?
That can work beautifully. Use a bedspread as a calm base and lay a differently colored throw folded at the foot of the bed. Let one color reappear in a pillow or other accessory. This creates cohesion without everything having to be exactly the same.
Make sure the extra layer remains practical. A lot of fabric on a narrow bed can pile up, while a very small throw on a large bed will only work as an accent. For the coverage, read our explanation about the right size bedspread and measuring your bed.
Also check the maintenance
Check the wash label and the size of the item before purchase. A large bedspread does not automatically fit in every washing machine. Do not assume that a blanket or bedspread can go in the dryer either: the instructions of the chosen version are leading.
