Voorraadpotten kiezen: welke formaten heb je nodig?

Storage jars keep your kitchen tidy, but choosing the right size can be tricky. Will a full package of muesli fit inside? Is the jar tall enough for your pasta? And can you easily reach in with a spoon? By first considering how you will use them, you can choose jars that are both practical and look good.

Start with the product you want to store

Make a list of the ingredients you want to store in jars. Think of coffee, tea, sugar, rice, pasta, nuts or breakfast cereals. Note down how much you usually buy and where you want to place the jar. A different jar is suitable for a small amount of tea than for a large bag of breakfast cereals.

Use the storage jar collection to compare models by capacity and shape. Also look at storage tins if you prefer an opaque storage option.

Millilitres are not the same as grams

The capacity of a storage jar is often given in millilitres or litres. This is a measure of volume. The weight that fits inside depends on the ingredient: light breakfast cereals take up more space than fine-grained sugar for the same weight. A one-litre jar is therefore not automatically suitable for one kilogram of every product.

Want to be sure how much space your usual package requires? Measure the volume with a measuring cup, or compare it with a storage container whose capacity you know. Leave some space so you can easily fill and close the jar.

Compare capacity, height and opening

  • Capacity: enough space for the amount you normally store.
  • Height: fits between the shelves of your pantry.
  • Width: enough space to place several jars side by side.
  • Opening: suitable for pouring or using a spoon.
  • Shape: suited to the length and shape of the ingredient.

For long pasta, the internal height is therefore more important. A jar with enough volume may still be too short to store spaghetti upright.

A set for a simple base

The Cheffinger glass storage jars with bamboo lid consist of three jars, each with a capacity of 1150 ml. This makes the set a possible base for a row of matching storage jars. Choose an ingredient for each jar and check whether your usual quantity fits.

Glass shows what is in the jar and how much is left. Keep light-sensitive ingredients in a suitable place and follow the storage instructions on the original packaging.

Storage tins for coffee, tea and sugar

Want to give your coffee corner a cohesive look? The Kadirelli storage tins with bamboo lid in white are a set of three metal tins for coffee, tea and sugar. The product information states a height of 14.5 cm and a width of 10 cm. The tins are not dishwasher-safe and should be cleaned with a damp cloth.

Also pay attention to the closure and maintenance

A lid and an airtight closure are not necessarily the same. Check what is stated for the chosen model. Also check whether the jar and the lid have different maintenance instructions. Only fill a cleaned jar when all parts are completely dry.

Note down the contents, expiry date and, if applicable, the date it was opened. Keep information about preparation and allergens. It is best to empty and clean the jar before adding a new supply.
