Do you want to give your stairs a new look without carpeting the entire staircase? Self-adhesive stair mats are a practical solution. The half-moon mats cover the part of the stair tread that is walked on most often and give the stairs a neat appearance at the same time.
But how do you ensure that all the stair mats are placed neatly straight and in the same position? In this guide, we explain step by step how you can apply self-adhesive stair mats.
Why choose self-adhesive stair mats?
With traditional stair carpeting, it may be necessary to carpet a large part or even the entire staircase. With individual half-moons, a large part of the original stair treads remains visible.
Self-adhesive models also have the advantage that you do not need to install a complicated fastening system.
The stair mats at TEKZEN are equipped with a self-adhesive fastening, allowing you to place them individually on the stair treads.
What do you need?
Good preparation makes placement much easier. Before you start, make sure you have the stair mats, a tape measure or measuring tape, and optionally a pencil or removable marker at hand.
In addition, it is important that the stair treads are thoroughly clean.
Dirt, dust, and grease can affect the adhesion of the self-adhesive layer.
Step 1: clean the stair treads thoroughly
Do not start sticking right away.
First, carefully clean each tread and remove dust, dirt, and any grease residue. Then let the stairs dry completely.
Especially the area where the self-adhesive stair mat is attached must be clean and dry.
Step 2: determine the center of the stair tread
A common mistake is placing the first stair mat by eye and then trying to align all the other mats to it.
The result can be that the stair mats shift a little bit each time.
Therefore, first measure the width of the stair tread and determine the center. Do the same with the stair mat.
This way you can align both center points with each other.
Step 3: first place the stair mat loosely
Do not remove the protective layer from the adhesive side yet.
Place the first half-moon stair mat loosely on the tread and check from different angles whether the position is correct.
Especially check the distance to the front and both sides of the tread.
Are you satisfied? Then note down or remember the dimensions used, so you can repeat them on the next treads.
Step 4: use the same distance on every tread
A neat result is created mainly through consistency.
When the first stair mat is, for example, placed exactly in the center and at a certain distance from the front of the tread, use the same measurements for all subsequent treads.
It is better to measure each tread individually than to assume that all treads are exactly the same.
Step 5: attach the self-adhesive stair mat
When you are sure that the position is correct, you can remove the protective film from the self-adhesive fastening.
Then carefully place the stair mat in the predetermined position.
Press it down evenly according to the product instructions. Prevent the mat from shifting too much during attachment, as this could cause it to end up crooked.
Step 6: check every tread again
Preferably work tread by tread.
So do not first place all the mats loosely and then stick everything down at a high pace.
After each attached stair mat, you can check from the bottom of the stairs whether everything is still neatly aligned in one line.
A deviation of a few millimeters is barely noticeable on one tread, but can become increasingly obvious over an entire staircase.
Step 7: check the attachment
When all the stair mats are placed, check each mat individually.
Pay particular attention to the edges and check whether the mat fits well against the stair tread everywhere.
Always follow the instructions that come with the specific stair mats before use.
How many stair mats do you need?
Before ordering a set, it is wise to simply count the number of treads you want to carpet.
TEKZEN stair mat sets contain 15 half-moons. If you have fifteen treads or fewer that you want to provide with stair mats, then one set may be sufficient.
Do you have more treads? Then calculate in advance how many sets you need.
Do not forget any deviating treads or an intermediate landing.
Which color stair mat suits your stairs?
In addition to placement, color plays an important role in the final result.
On a light or white staircase, dark stair mats provide a clear contrast. On a wooden staircase, gray or other neutral shades can actually match the natural appearance of the wood beautifully.
Also look at the colors of the floor, walls, and hallway. The stairs often form a large part of this space, which means the color of the stair mats can be quite determining.
Half-moons or full stair carpeting?
Half-moon stair mats are especially interesting when you want to keep the original stairs visible.
They cover the most important walking area of the tread, but not the entire surface.
This way you retain, for example, the character of a wooden staircase while adding a softer walking surface at the same time.
One example is the TEKZEN stair mat set in anthracite bouclé, 15 pieces of 56 × 17 × 3 cm. Compare these dimensions with your treads and check whether the surface is suitable for attachment.

With careful measuring and consistently using the same position, you can neatly distribute self-adhesive stair mats over the entire staircase.
Especially take your time with the first tread. When it is placed correctly and you note down the dimensions, placing the remaining half-moons becomes much easier.
